Playing a much more maternal woman that she is noted for, she plays Henriette Deluzy-Desportes, a governess employed by the Duke Theo de Praslin to care for his children among them a young June Lockhart and restrained Virginia Weidler. She is not welcomed by his wife, the Duchese de Praslin, who would rather have her out on the streets than anyplace in the house.

  1. Charles Boyer is very likeable and dignified as the Duke. The interactions between Betty and the children were definitely dramatized but it was to emphasize the fact that they came from a broken home and she would do anything for them. Davis was nominated for "Best Actress" in the more recently released "The Letter"or she would have been nominated for this performance. Chapter 7 [] 8.
