Young adults would be the best fit for the intended audience because the story takes place in Long-Island High school. About two boys named Eddie White and Marcus black that are seniors at Long-Island and play for the basketball team that get in some major trouble. I think the purpose for this work is to learn by you mistakes and try the best you can to stay out of trouble.

I was inspired to write Black and White , a novel about two Long Island City High School basketball stars and best friends who thought they'd "put all that racial crap behind us till we were almost like real blood-brothers," by several very real experiences in New York City. From , I taught adolescents awaiting trial on Rikers Island to read and write. The job was incredibly rewarding, and eye opening. Unfortunately, one of the most striking elements on Rikers Island is race. The inequities of the criminal justice system, including who can afford the best lawyer and who can make bail, has deemed that an overwhelming majority of inmates there are African-American. The protagonists in Black and White , Marcus Brown Black and Eddie Russo White , come in contact with that system when they put their sure-shot college scholarships at risk by staging a series of stickups to afford trendy new basketball kicks. But once they get caught, their storybook friendship faces a new kind of reality.

Most of the time, I love young adult literature and am proud to be a YA librarian. If a YA book features a white, female protagonist and this accounts for a not insignificant portion of YA released each year , it seems inevitable that the book cover will display an idealized and airbrushed masterpiece of her on the cover. And when a YA book actually does have a protagonist of color, too often one of three things seems to happen:. These forms of racism on the part of publishers are unacceptable. This book is really good to read. This worked for some time until one night. It may even be true.

Error rating book. Other Editions 3! I think somewhere there is a consensus that pretty white girls with dead expressions and flowing dresses sell YA books. I think there is a story about that in Moccasin Thunder.
