For a an cheap alternative to the larger art books you might enjoy Lessons on Shading by W. While I understand to some extant why Isabelle's father is the way he is, we never really got a good feel for why the emperor is so evil Romance: Much like most of the characters in this book I didn't find the romance all that compelling either. I was completely engrossed. I read both books with vigor.

So much going on and I was hooked and could not stop reading. This book spans pages covering a handful of techniques for hatching and detailed line work in ink. The back cover says: An Emperor Hunts Them. On Sale Now.
If I had been reading it, I likely wouldn't have finished. We never really got to see how Henry and Isabelle fell in love and there wasn't much interaction between the two that wasn't just a discussion of what to do next. The Llewellyn Journal. It didn't work.
