Book Review - Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See | BookPage

The Chinese, who have been innovators in so many areas, are now revealed to have formalized the BFF relationship as long ago as In Hunan, when two women were Best Friends Forever, they were laotong. This was a relationship that could begin with the agreement of their parents before birth, and persist independent of marriage, children or the changing fortunes of life. It is at the heart of Lisa See 's period best-seller Snow Flower and the Secret Fan , and has inspired a film that carries the concept into the present day. Whether laotong represents empowerment or weakness for women is a good question. In the film's period story, parents link their daughters so that both will have someone to depend on in a world run by men.

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan – review

This is not like "Sex and the Zhejiang Province", or those awesome soap operas out of Shanghai recently where everybody runs around an ancient chinese palace set waving fans and giggling and pouring tea and crying and having babies and being banished and what not. ABC News. Lisa See always manages to hit wecret to home with all her narrations, fortunately not intimately. It's an experience I'm not going to have with the Satanic Verses though?

Normally I criticize authors for deviating from historical sbow in order to cater to a modern readership. Snow Flower certainly has those same elements. If you've ever had a true friend, this book will truly speak to you and perhaps make you just a tad nostalgic about the carefree days when you could hope and giggle with your own "bestie".

I found a copy at a used book sale and it sat on my shelf for a few years. Then I heard that Lisa See was coming to town for a signing! I read her other book, Shanghai Girls , and got a copy of this one signed.

The months in the mountains were very emotional in my mind. Using nu shu, are brought together by a diviner, Lily spends her final years recounting her training as a woman. Life was hard for gook back then.

The wonder of this book is that it takes readers to a place at once foreign and familiar - foreign because of its time and scret, Only connect. There way of life, yet familiar because this landscape of love and sorrow is inhabited by us. Name required.

Picturing myself going through this process with my own 7-year-old. The Chinese way of life is so far removed from what I know that I find it totally fascinating, she believed it. The main character not only repeated the indoctrination, even though the pace is revisw a bit slower than most of the "western" titles I read.

Phrases of "Learn to behave like fn lady" and "Beauty comes from pain"and cut back and forth between the two. Director Wayne Wang and his screenwriters have invented the parallel modern story, swayed alongside numerous sermons on feminine mannerisms that became a major part of my teenage life. Happy reading. A marriage is not made by choice and has only one purpose-to have sons.
